Evidence Matters
Yahweh does not look lightly on worshiping lesser/false gods and the murdering of innocent children. As a warning, He sent the Babylonians, a foreign-speaking nation, to attack from the north (Jeremiah 1:15; 5:15). Using restrained force, the Babylonians conquer Judah.
After capturing the city, Babylon forces Judah's allegiance. In attempt to ensure Judah remains subjective,
Babylon takes select prisoners from Judah's court. These prisoners return to Babylon to assimilate them into the local culture.
Meanwhile, back in Judah, the people fail to heed Yahweh's warnings. Rather than repent and turn back to their Lord, they place their faith in themselves, promising to build back better, just as they had done in generations past:
The bricks have fallen down, But we will rebuild with hewn stones; The sycamores are cut down, But we will replace them with cedars
