God’s Original Family
Who were the first created sons of God?
Take a moment and arrive at the answer as you understand it.
Now, as with all these topics, let’s turn and compare with the Bible.
Within the Bible the book of Job describes the saga of Job, a righteous man tormented by Satan after the Lord gave Satan permission to do so. After enduring great trials and loss, Job felt sorry for himself. It is in this state the Lord shows up and corrects Job for his questioning of the Lord’s understanding and greatness:
Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said:
2 “Who is this who darkens counsel
By words without knowledge?
3 Now prepare yourself like a man;
I will question you, and you shall answer Me.
4 “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Tell Me, if you have understanding.
5 Who determined its measurements?
Surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
6 To what were its foundations fastened?
Or who laid its cornerstone,
7 When the morning stars sang together,
And all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8 “Or who shut in the sea with doors,
When it burst forth and issued from the womb;
9 When I made the clouds its garment,
And thick darkness its swaddling band;
10 When I fixed My limit for it,
And set bars and doors;
11 When I said,
‘This far you may come, but no farther,
And here your proud waves must stop!’
-Job 38 (KJV)
Did You Catch It?!
The Lord humbles Job in this passage as the Lord reminds Job that it was the Lord who created the Earth long before Job existed. In this example, the Lord starts with recounting the day He created the Earth “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?” (vs. 4).
Draw your attention to verse 7:
When the morning stars sang together,
And all the sons of God shouted for joy?
(Emphasis added)
At a minimum, this was days before Adam was created, yet there were, as the Bible describes it, “sons of God.”
So who were these sons of God? Further study reveals many Bible translations instead use the term “angels.” To get the most accurate answer, we’ll look at the original language.
bēn 'ĕlōhîm
Using blueletterbible.org,
we see the Hebrew phrase bēn 'ĕlōhîm
Note the Hebrew words: bēn most closely matching son/s and 'ĕlōhîm matching God. We’ll dig further into these words soon. For now, take note of the two words together and the already discussed context of this passage.
Conclusion: The Bible describes the Lord having spiritual sons before Adam was created.
