Evidence Matters
Yahweh does not look lightly on worshiping lesser/false gods and the murdering of innocent children. As a warning, He sent the Babylonians, a foreign-speaking nation, to attack from the north (Jeremiah 1:15; 5:15). Using restrained force, the Babylonians conquer Judah.
After capturing the city, Babylon forces Judah's allegiance.
In attempt to ensure Judah remains subjective, Babylon takes select prisoners from Judah's court. These prisoners return to Babylon for assimilation into the local culture.
Meanwhile, back in Judah, the people fail to heed Yahweh's warnings. Rather than repent and turn back to their Lord, they place their faith in themselves, promising to build back better, just as Isaiah prophesied:
The bricks have fallen down, But we will rebuild with hewn stones; The sycamores are cut down, But we will replace them with cedars.
-Isaiah 9:10, NKJV
Due to Judah's continued rebellion against Yahweh, Jeremiah once again relays words from Yahweh:
And after all that, says the LORD, I will hand over King Zedekiah [of Judah], his staff, and everyone else in the city who survives the disease, war, and famine.
I will hand them over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and to their other enemies. He will slaughter them and show them no mercy, pity, or compassion.
-Jeremiah 21:7 NLT
